LPG vs Oil Heating: Which Suits Off-Grid Homes?

Both LPG and oil give off-grid homes full central heating and hot water. Oil has typically been the cheaper fuel per unit of heat and lets you buy from any supplier. LPG boilers are more compact and cleaner-burning, and LPG allows combi boilers and gas cooking, but supply is often tied to a contract with the company that owns the tank.

The right choice depends on space for a tank, your existing system, how you like to buy fuel and current prices. Our LPG boiler installation and oil boiler installation pages cover both.

LPG and an oil tank outside a large rural home

Side-by-side comparison

Oil LPG
Fuel storage Oil tank, often bunded Tank (above or below ground) or cylinders
Tank ownership Usually owned by the homeowner Often owned by the supplier
Buying fuel Shop around between suppliers Often tied to supplier contract
Boiler size Often larger, sometimes floor-standing Compact, wall-hung options
Combi boilers Available but less common Widely available
Emissions Higher Lower
Servicing OFTEC registered technician recommended Gas Safe engineer qualified for LPG
Cooking No Gas hob possible

Running costs

Running costs depend on current fuel prices, boiler efficiency and how the system is set up. Prices for both fuels move, sometimes sharply, so compare up-to-date quotes rather than relying on older figures. With LPG, the price terms in your supply contract matter a great deal.

Space and siting

Both tanks must meet siting rules on distances from buildings, boundaries, drains and ignition sources. Oil tanks may need bunding depending on size and location. LPG tanks have separation distances for safety. An installer will check the options for your property.

When LPG tends to suit

  • You want a compact boiler or a combi
  • There’s a suitable spot for an LPG tank
  • You’d like a gas hob
  • You’d rather avoid oil storage and the risk of spills

When oil tends to suit

  • You already have a good oil tank and system
  • You want to shop around for fuel
  • LPG contract terms don’t appeal
  • The existing system is designed around a regular or system boiler

Don’t forget heat pumps

For many off-grid homes, an air source heat pump is worth comparing too. It compares more favourably against oil and LPG than against mains gas, and grants may be available. It depends on insulation, radiators and space, so it needs a proper survey.

Off-grid homes in Oxfordshire

Villages around Witney, Thame, Bicester and Princes Risborough include many homes without mains gas. Older stone properties often have oil systems that have been in place for decades. When the boiler needs replacing, it’s a good moment to compare all three options. Our guide to upgrading your heating system explains what’s involved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from oil to LPG?

Yes. It involves removing or decommissioning the oil tank, installing an LPG tank and supply, and fitting an LPG boiler. Radiators and pipework can often stay.

Is LPG safer than oil?

Both are safe when correctly installed and maintained. They have different risks: oil spills for oil, and gas leaks for LPG. Annual servicing and a carbon monoxide alarm are important for both.

Which lasts longer, an oil or LPG boiler?

Lifespan depends more on the boiler quality, installation and servicing than the fuel.
