Oil boilers need servicing every year because their burners are finely tuned and wear quickly. Over a year of use, the nozzle wears, filters collect sludge and soot coats the heat exchanger. Each one reduces efficiency, increases oil use and makes lockouts more likely, often on the coldest day of the year.
An annual service by a competent technician, ideally OFTEC registered, puts that right and is usually a warranty condition. If your oil boiler is old or unreliable, our oil boiler installation page explains the replacement options.

What goes wrong without servicing
| Issue | Effect |
| Worn nozzle | Poor oil spray, dirtier combustion |
| Blocked filters | Oil starvation, lockouts |
| Soot on heat exchanger | Less heat into the water, higher oil use |
| Incorrect burner settings | Smoke, smell, inefficiency |
| Degraded seals | Fumes escaping, lower efficiency |
| Unnoticed tank or line faults | Leaks or supply problems |
What the technician checks
- Burner: nozzle replaced, electrodes and components cleaned
- Filters at the boiler and on the supply line
- Heat exchanger and baffles cleaned
- Combustion analysed and adjusted
- Flue checked for condition and correct operation
- Seals checked and replaced where needed
- Oil line, fire valve and tank inspected
- Controls and system pressure checked
The effect on your oil bills
A clean, correctly set burner uses oil more efficiently. Soot is a particular culprit: even a thin layer on the heat exchanger acts as insulation, so more heat goes up the flue. Regular servicing keeps that in check, which helps keep oil use under control.
Warranty and insurance
Most manufacturers require annual servicing for the warranty. Some home insurance policies also expect oil systems, including tanks, to be maintained. Keep your service records together.
When to book
Late summer and early autumn are ideal. It leaves time to sort any repairs before winter, when demand for technicians peaks and oil deliveries in rural areas can take longer.
Oil heating in rural Oxfordshire
Many villages around Witney, Thame, Bicester and Princes Risborough are off the gas grid, so oil and LPG are common. Older stone and period properties in the Cotswolds edge and the Oxfordshire countryside often have oil boilers that work hard through long winters, so annual servicing matters. For a look at when replacement makes more sense than repair, see our guide on replacing a 15-year-old boiler.
Signs your oil boiler needs attention now
- Repeated lockouts
- Black smoke or soot at the flue
- Oil smell indoors or outside
- Rumbling or noisy ignition
- Oil use rising unexpectedly
If the boiler keeps locking out, don’t keep resetting it. Call a technician. Our services page covers repairs.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gas engineer service my oil boiler?
Only if they’re also trained and competent in oil. OFTEC registration is the recognised scheme for oil heating technicians.
How long does an oil boiler service take?
Usually longer than a gas service, due to the nozzle change and cleaning. Allow a couple of hours, depending on the boiler.
Does the service include the oil tank?
A visual inspection of the tank and supply line is normally part of a thorough service. A more detailed tank inspection may be offered separately.
